Inculcate scientific temper among kids: Guv to scientists

E S L Narasimhan
Governor E S L Narasimhan has called upon scientists to visit schools often to inculcate scientific temper among children and fulfil the dream of former President A P J Abdul Kalam. The Governor underscored the need to keep children away from television and asked parents to divert their attention to education and experiments. Speaking at Kalam’s 85th birth anniversary celebrations at Ravindra Bharati organised by Vandemataram Foundation, the Governor lauded Kalam’s services to the nation and said that he was the role model for the entire country.
“Abdul Kalam dreamed till the end of his life to make school students responsible citizens by inculcating discipline, moral values and ethics. Kalam, who always maintained simplicity, showed keen interest in teaching children and always shared his views with them,” he said. Recalling his experiences with Kalam, the Governor said that he used to like ‘Sambar’ rice. “These days, education has become business. At present, there is a need to improve relations between teachers and students.
Students must be committed and utilise their intelligence for the development of the country, instead of planning to live abroad,” he said. Vandemataram Foundation founder T Ravindra requested the government to construct a Smriti Bhavan (memorial building) in the city for Abdul Kalam as he started his experiments and research from the city. Later, the Governor released ‘Scientists to Schools’ poster and presented the Vandemataram Foundation awards to several personalities who served in the villages.
